Byron Bay is home to some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in Australia. The town is situated right on the oceanfront about 1.5 hours drive south of the Gold Coast. It is an icon to backpackers travelling through Australia who continue to flock here to experience the wonderful beaches and the sensational hinterland attractions. Cape Byron is the eastern most point on the Australian mainland and the Cape is adorned with a magnificent lighthouse. Hang Gliders love the Cape and can be seen soaring around and above the lighthouse on practically any day. The Cape is situated at the northern end of Byron Bays beach which is always packed with beachgoers. Surfers come here in droves to ride the breaks along the beach, around the Cape and at Lennox Head which lies at the southern end of the beach. The town area has a real village feel to it. It is a great place to sit in a cosy café and go people watching. Some of the sights you will see defy description. People who live an “alternative” lifestyle in the hinterland around Byron Bay often visit the town and provide a kaleidoscope of unusual appearances and customs.
The Ferals, as they are known are an integral part of the culture of Byron Bay. At the other extreme there are many people who return time and again to Byron Bay to share all the things that are great about Byron. Some of the restaurants are sensational and there are spa retreats close to town that provide luxury that is hard to find anywhere else in the country. Byron bay is definitely a place of extremes. There is always plenty to do around Byron Bay. The magnificent hinterland provides many opportunities for rainforest bushwalking, picnics or simply exploring some of the quaint nearby towns and villages. There are plenty of tours and activities on offer. During the annual whale migration, humpback whales swim close to the coast and Cape Byron is one of the best vantage points.
